A continuous process for the production of bis-(#-hydroxy ethyl) terephthalate comprises feeding a substantially solvent-free mixture of terephthalic acid and at least a stoichiometric amount of ethylene oxide to a reaction section under superatmospheric pressure and discharging the reaction mixture from the reaction section to atmospheric pressure, the reaction section comprising one or more cylindrical reactors having therein a rotor provided with means for agitating or scraping the thin film of reaction mixture deposited on the interior wall and also provided with a cooling jacket for cooling the reactor. |
