An illuminating device has: a light source (101); a light guide means (102) wherein light emitted from the light source (101) is supplied to one end surface, and the light inputted from the end surface propagates the inside and is outputted from the other end surface; illuminating optical systems (103-107) which form an optical image formed on the other end surface of the light guide means (102) on a display element (22); a reflecting polarization plate (109), which is arranged between the illuminating optical systems (103-107) and the display element (22), transmits first polarization light and reflects second polarization light in a polarization state different from that of a first polarization in the direction to the illuminating optical systems (103-107); a retardation plate (108) arranged between the light guide means (102) and the reflecting polarization plate (109); and a reflecting means (21), which is arranged on the side facing the light guide means (102) end surface supplied with light and reflects light entered through the retardation plate (108), illuminating optical systems (103-107) and the light guide means (102) out of the light reflected by the reflecting polarization plate (109) in the direction to such end surface of the light guide means (102). The light emitting center of the light source (101) is deviated from the center axis of the light guide means (102). |
