Disclosed is a semiconductor light emitting element wherein light extraction efficiency is improved by suppressing reflection between a semiconductor layer and a translucent substrate. The semiconductor light emitting element is provided with: a semiconductor multilayer section, which is formed on the surface of the substrate, and includes a light emitting layer; a diffraction surface, which is formed on the front surface side of the substrate, has light emitted from the light emitting layer inputted thereto, and has recessed sections or protruding sections formed thereon with a cycle longer than the optical wavelength of the light and shorter than the coherent length of the light; and a reflection surface, which is formed on the rear surface side of the substrate, reflects the light diffracted by means of the diffraction surface and inputs the light again to the diffraction surface. |
