The method involves detecting a low-floor barricade in the circumference of the vehicle (1) by a remote sensor of the vehicle. The distance of the barricade to the vehicle is determined. The distance is determined by considering the information about the distance before entering into the close-up range while approaching a ground level or a ground-contacting component of the vehicle within the close-up range of the vehicle. The barricade lies outside the detection area of the remote sensor. An independent claim is also included for a driver assistance system for maneuvering a vehicle.
