PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress deterioration of fuel economy by controlling intake air volume of an internal combustion engine in restarting. SOLUTION: This method for controlling the operation of the internal combustion engine automatically stops the internal combustion engine when a predetermined stopping condition is satisfied and also restarts the automatically stopped internal combustion engine when a predetermine restart condition is satisfied, in the internal combustion engine driving a hydraulic pump pressurizing hydraulic fluid supplied to a continuously variable transmission. A load on the hydraulic pump is predicted by the time elapsed from the automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine to the restarting thereof, and the intake air volume is controlled based on the predicted load.
