PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader improving a throughput of continuously reading a both-side original without complicating the mechanism and control for carrying the original. SOLUTION: A both-side path includes carrying paths B2 to B4. The carrying path B2 carries an original A fed from a paper feed tray 11 to a reading position C2. The carrying path B3 makes the original passing the reading position C2 have a U-turn, and makes the original A advance to the reading position C2 again from the side opposite from the carrying path B2. The carrying path B4 ejects the original that advances from the carrying path B3 and passes the reading position C2. An original feeding part 15 makes different originals alternately advance from the carrying paths B2 and B3 to the reading position C2 by sequentially feeding three or more originals A from the paper feed tray 11 while leaving an interval that is less than the length of a U-turn path and equal to or greater than the length of the original, and simultaneously carries the three or more originals so that the throughput of carrying the originals is improved.
