PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a fatty acid alkyl ester and an additive for producing the fatty acid alkyl ester for easily removing an alkali metal catalyst in production of the fatty acid alkyl ester using the alkali metal catalyst. SOLUTION: The method for producing a fatty acid alkyl ester includes a reaction process for obtaining a mixture containing the fatty acid alkyl ester and glycerol by reacting triglyceride with alcohol under the presence of the alkali metal catalyst, and purification processes for treating the mixture to purify the fatty acid alkyl ester. In the method of producing a fatty acid alkyl ester, a quaternary ammonium carbonate different from the alkali metal catalyst is added in the reaction process or at least one of the purification processes.
