PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iron oxide complex for administration to a mammalian subject. SOLUTION: A composition, and methods of producing and using the composition are provided for an enhanced magnetic resonance imaging agent and a hematinic agent. The agents comprise a carboxyalkylated reduced polysaccharide-coated ultrafine superparamagnetic iron oxide. The method of using carboxymethyl-reduced dextran as a plasma extender is also provided.
