The aim of the invention is a novel design for a fuel cell stack and a membrane assembly having said novel design. The invention relates to a membrane assembly (1) for a fuel cell stack (2), wherein in the fuel cell stack (2), a plurality of such membrane assemblies (1) and bipolar plates (9) are stacked in a stacking direction S to form fuel cells, comprising an MEA plate (3), which comprises a membrane for separating an anode compartment and a cathode compartment, and comprising a housing section (5), which is designed to space the MEA plates (3) and/or the bipolar plates (9) from each other in the stacking direction S in the fuel cell stack (1), wherein the housing section (5) is connected to the MEA plate by means of a connecting section (4).
