A suction dredging installation comprises a vessel 10, a suction pipe 12 connected to a sand pump 13, and means for measuring the pressure difference between a first point M 1 in or near the end of the suction pipe and a (notional) point M 3 at the same level but with only water above it by using a pump 16 pumping water through a first conduit 19 ending at the first point M 1 and a second conduit 20 ending at second point M 2 in the water, and having a pressure difference pick-up 28 located on board the vessel and connected by pipes 23, 24 containing water to a pair of points T 1 T 2 on the conduits spaced well above the first and second points M 1 M 2 and at corresponding proportional distances along the length of the conduits. There may be further conduits and pipes, and pressure difference pick-ups to measure the pressure difference in suction pipe 12 between the two sides of pump 13, and the pressure difference between other pairs of points.</p> |
