In a single spindle lathe for machining contact lenses there is provided a compound slide mounted on a carriage 17 on the bed 15, the compound slide comprising upper and lower slide members 43 and 18 respectively, the upper slide member 43 carrying a swivel member 40, pivotable about the axis a swivel post 42, on which the tool post 52 is mounted. The lower slide 18 is adjustable transversely of the machine bed and of the spindle axis in order to align the cutting tool 30 in the tool post 52 with the spindle axis. The upper slide is adjustable parallel with the spindle axis to locate the cutting tool longitudinally with respect to the spindle axis. A dial gauge 95 on the carriage 17 is provided to effect the setting of the position of the upper slide and a further dial gauge 105 is provided to set the position of the cutting tool 30 in relation to the axis of the swivel post 42. A gauge block 58 is also used to effect the exact setting of the cutting tool tip the reading on the dial gauge 105 being zero when the precise setting is obtained. The cutting tool is adjustable longitudinally in the tool post by screw means 48 and vertically by the wedge members 62 and 63. In operation, a lens member 28 secured in the machine spindle is machined by pivoting of the swivel member 40 carrying the cutting tool 30, by the handle 85. The location of the tip of the cutting tool either on one side or the other of the pivoting axis along the axis of the spindle permits concave or convex surfaces to be machined. |
