Heading C2C. 2 - Amino - 1 - butanol and 2 - amino - 2- ethyl-1,3-propane diol are made by reacting 1- nitropropane with formaldehyde in a mole ratio of 0.6 to 0.95 : 1 in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to produce a mixture of 2-nitro-1- butanol and 2-nitro-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol, reducing these nitroalkanols by hydrogenation in the presence of sponge nickel to produce a mixture of required products, then distilling the reaction mixture at about 100‹ C. at atmospheric pressure to separate low-boiling constituents, and thereafter distilling the mixture at reduced pressure to separate 2-amino-1-butanol therefrom, the residue comprising 2-amino-2-ethyl- 1,3-propanediol.
