PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extending and contracting device to be built between adjacent lower structures of the bridge and having a function capable of following change of size of an expansion gap even when the expansion gap between bridge girders opposing to each other in the direction of bridge axis or between the bridge girder and the lower structure is or exceeds amount of relative deformation of one extending and contracting device. SOLUTION: This extending and contracting device 4 includes: a plurality of sliding members 5 being arranged in parallel in the direction of width of the bridge girder 1, being installed across between the opposing bridge girders 1 and 1 or between the bridge girder 1 and the lower structure, being anchored on the bridge girder 1 on a side of one end part in the axial direction or the lower structure in the one end part, and being supported on the bridge girder 1 on a side of the other end part or the lower structure to move relatively and freely within a bridge surface; and one or more movable slabs 6 being arranged between the opposing bridge girders 1 and 1 or between the bridge girder 1 and the lower structure across a plurality of sliding members 5 being arranged in parallel in the direction of width of the bridge girder 1 and being supported on the sliding members 5.
