A process for manufacturing a decorative laminate comprises applying to a substrate a fibrous sheet impregnated with synthetic resin and including pigmented enamel and applying heat and/or pressure so that the sheet adheres to the substrate and presents a decorative face. The sheet may include fibres of cellulose, e.g. paper, and/or plastics, glass, metal or asbestos fibres. The impregnating resin may be melamine formaldehyde, a phenoplast, silicone, polyester, polyamide, polyurethane or a derivative thereof, epoxy resin, polyvinyl, polyolefine, polyfluoroethene, or cellulose derivative or rubber. The pigmented enamel may be added to glass paste before forming this into fibres for the decorative sheet, or metal fibres may be coated with enamel before forming them into the decorative sheet, or ground enamel may be added to a paper pulp, e.g. of cellulose, rayon polyester or polyamide fibres, prior to forming the decorative sheet, or the decorative sheet may be printed on at least one face using an ink containing ground enamel. The laminate may include, in the impregnating resin, a material which absorbs ultra-violet radiation, e.g. 2- hydroxy 4-methoxy benzophenone, to reduce ageing. The surface of the laminate may be formed with rounded pits and projections to give an abrasion resistant, non-reflective surface. The substrate may be a layer of plywood, mineral sheet, asbestos board, metal, or foamed plastics or impregnated fibrous sheet. It may be used as a weatherproof facing for buildings. The decorative sheet may be covered by a colourless paper or rayon sheet. The resins impregnating the various layers may be different. |
