PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a resin which is excellent in heat resistance, excellent in solubility to a solvent, and usable as a coating agent for a semiconductor and as a resin for a resist. SOLUTION: The modified dimethylnaphthalene formaldehyde resin is obtained by modifying a dimethylnaphthalene formaldehyde resin having a specific structure with a phenol containing as an essential component a compound of formula [2] wherein R<SB>1</SB>is hydrogen or a 1-4C alkyl group; and R<SB>2</SB>is a 5-20C hydrocarbon and may contain an aromatic ring and a hetero atom.
