Catalyst system for polymerising cycloalkenes with 5-12 ring atoms, comprises (a) a hydride or hydrocarbyl cpd. of a non-transition metal and (b) a tungsten cpd. (Hal)m-W-(Y-R)n where Hal = halogen, Y = O, or S, R = hydrocarbyl, opt. substd. by >=1 halogen atoms, m+n = valency of W (pref. 5 or 6), and in which (depending on number of -Y-R gps), the Y-R gps, may be joined to form a -Y-R-R-Y gp). Products are synthetic rubbers which can be vulcanised with the usual agents.
