<p>The operation is effected in an inert gas on the harvesting machine in appts. in a U-shaped frame mounted on wheels, so that it can straddle and move along a row of vines. A closed recipient receives the grapes from an elevating screw; the squashing unit is provided with beating blades which turn in a perforated rotary drum. The grape stalks etc. are pushed through the drum and evacuated into a sack; the material passing through the perforations in the drum is carried by an endless screw to the evacuation orifice. The inert gas, such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen, is introduced from a cylinder through the inlet of the storage recipient; it displaces any air in the squashing unit and the elevator casing so that the grapes are enclosed in the inert gas immediately after being detached from the vine. Oxidation is thus prevented and the quality of the prod. improved.</p> |
