New biogical bifidogene complex - useful as infant diet supplement

Growth factor for Lactobacillus bifidus comprising a hydrolysate of pig gastric mucin contg. 15% w/w of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, useful as a dietetic supplement for babies fed on cow's milk or commercial prepns. which provides a diet having an effect similar to human milk and establishes a normal intestinal flora. A prefd. diet comprises 100-150 g. of the complex added to 100 kg. powdered milk. The hydrolysate is prepd. by heating a soln. of gastric mucin in water contg. HCl to 90-95 degrees C for 1 hr. removing HCl with anion-exchange and concn. of the eluate. The acetylglucosamine is added to the concentrate which is freeze-dried after sterile filtration.
