PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple, safe and low cost method for synthesizing a ruthenium or an osmium carbene catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for synthesizing a compound expressed by the formula: (X)(X<SP>1</SP>)(L)(L<SP>1</SP>)M=C(R<SP>17</SP>)(CH<SB>2</SB>CR<SP>12</SP>R<SP>13</SP>R') is provided by comprising a process of bringing a compound expressed by the formula into contact with a compound of the formula: R<SP>17</SP>C≡CCR<SP>12</SP>R<SP>13</SP>R' and then adding a compound of the formula: HX. In addition to the ease of the synthesis (typically, one step synthesis), the reaction generally proceeds at or higher than a room temperature, and also the obtained product can usually be used without performing sufficient purification after the synthesis.
