Provided are a body movement detecting device capable of responding adequately to user's life rhythm and calculating a unit-based body movement amount and a body movement detecting method to improve user's satisfaction. A pedometer (10) comprises: an acceleration detection unit (12) for obtaining an acceleration that changes according to the movements of a biological body; a calculation unit (14) for calculating the number of steps based on an acceleration signal (19a) detected by the acceleration detection unit (12); and a display unit (13) for displaying the calculated number of steps. The pedometer (10) further comprises a storage unit (16) for storing a change condition used as a section of one day that is a unit in which the number of steps are counted. The change condition is constituted by a condition determined based on the acceleration signal (19a) and a time signal (19b) indicating the detection time of the acceleration. The calculation unit (14) is configured so as to calculate the number of steps on a per daily basis by setting, as one day, the period until the correspondence to the change condition is obtained.
