[Also in Division B5] Apparatus mixing liquids of different viscosities especially a polymer composition for extrusion into textile fibrils comprises a screw having a feedzone 4A, a metering zone 6A, and a transition section 5A in which the depth of the screw flight gradually diminishes; the metering zone comprises 45-60 per cent of the length of the barrel and the screw has two to six flight-interruptions to accommodate mixing rings as at 11A, 12A, 13A, the ratio of flight interruption length to barrel diameter being between 0.1 and 0.36. The mixing rings (see also Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) comprise a series of obstructions across the flow of material. The material of greater viscosity is fed through the hopper 20, and that of lesser viscosity with the other, or by means not shown at or near the second interruption. The crest of the screw may be rounded as at 23, 24 and there may be ramps between the turns of the screw as at 22. The screw may be cooled at 25 in conjunction with heating in the transition and metering zones. |
