A body 10 of soft material such as aluminium, magnesium, &c. is formed with an aperture to receive an insert 16 of a harder metal or other material; the aperture includes a threaded portion 11 and a thread-relieved portion 12, with an annular shoulder 13 at the junction of portions 11, 12. The insert 16 has a head portion 20 and threaded portion 18 having a thread-relieved section of substantially one thread pitch to form a neck 22 spaced preferably a thread pitch beneath head 20. The head of the insert has a transverse slot 24 to receive a tool for installing the insert, the slot being of such depth as to extend through the thread portion between the head 20 and neck 22 so as to provide keyways 25. A member 26 for looking the insert 16 against rotation in the body 10 comprises a ring portion 28 from which project a pair of oppositely disposed keys 30, 31; the ring 28 receives the head 20 of the insert and is received in the counterbore 12. To effect locking, the keys 30, 31 are inserted in the keyways 25 and the locking member forced in until its top surface is flush with the surface of the body 10; the keys cut keyways through the threads of the body 10. The insert 16 has a screw-threaded bore 37 to receive a threaded stud or other member to be anchored in the body 10. In a modification, Fig. 5, the insert 40 is solid, having a stud or shank 42 projecting from the threaded portion 43; keyways 44 are provided. In a modification, Fig. 8, a tubular insert 69 has a threaded portion 70 and a thread-relieved head 72; a flange or collar 74 projects outwardly from the insert immediately beneath the head 72. The insert 69 is preferably thread-relieved immediately beneath the flange 74 to provide a short unthreaded neck 76. Keyways 73 are formed in the flange 74. The ends of the keys on the locking member are pointed. The insert 69 may be formed as a solid insert with a projecting stud or shank. A further modification of the insert is shown in Fig. 11. In a modification, Fig. 12, a tubular insert 90 is threaded throughout its whole length and has a transverse slot 92. |
