摘要 In a process in which olefines having n carbon atoms in the molecule are converted to an oxygenated reaction product containing aldehydes by reaction with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a cobalt carbonylation catalyst at elevated temperatures and pressures in a carbonylation zone and the carbonylation product is converted to a product containing alcohols, the oxygenated reaction product is intermediately heated with a zinciferous reaction modifier for an extended period of time (e.g. 2-48 hours) at 200-450 DEG F. under a pressure which is at least atmospheric (e.g. up to 1000 p.s.i.g.), and the thus-treated product is hydrogenated to form a product containing monohydric alcohols having 2n+2 carbon atoms in the molecule. The reaction modifier, the weight of which is advantageously 0.05 to 5 per cent of the weight of the aldehyde, may be added at least in part in the carbonylation zone, or wholly to the carbonylation product after removal from said zone, and the cobaltiferous material may be removed from the carbonylation product before or preferably after the heating thereof with the reaction modifier. A suitable arrangement of apparatus is described with the aid of a drawing. Examples describe the treatment of a heptene fraction to produce C8 and C16 alcohols, the following reaction modifiers being used: zinc oleate, zinc acetate and zinc alumina spinel. Mossy zinc and zinc turnings are also specified, and the production of C20 alcohols from C9 olefines is referred to.
