The cell is based on a vat-shaped body with a party wall of material permeable by the electrolyte but gas-tight, and each compartment so formed is filled with a powdery mass of catalytically active material through which the reagent gases permeate as well as the electrolyte. The separate gases are fed to the electrodes via tubes supported from covers over the compartments, these covers having drainage channels for electrolyte and reagent mixture.
