1367241 Sulphur dioxide; nitrogen CHEMIEBAU DR A ZIEREN GmbH & CO KG 3 Jan 1972 [19 Feb 1971] 108/72 Heading C1A Sulphur dioxide, water vapour and nitrogen are prepared by burning finely divided ammonium sulphate in a combustion chamber at a temperature between 800‹ and 1250‹ C. with a carbon-containing fuel, in such a way that an oxygen concentration of from 1 to 10% by volume is maintained in the gas leaving the combustion chamber. The ammonium sulphate may be of particle size between 0À01 and 1À0 mm. and is preferably blown axially into the combustion chamber by a stream of air. If desired sulphur may be burnt simultaneously in the combustion chamber or a fuel oil rich in sulphur or waste materials containing sulphur may be used. Preferably the ammonium sulphate is burnt at a temperature of from 900‹ to 1150‹ C. The air used for blowing may be warmed to 200‹ C.
