The device has a button (21) for controlling movement of a movable panel (13) and a masking element (14), and a unit for generating predetermined sets of electrical signals associated with positions of the movable panel and the masking element, respectively. The subset of electrical signals associated with the movable panel is recognized by a motor. The subset of electrical signals associated with the masking element is recognized by another motor. The electrical signals carry electrical binary data. An independent claim is also included for a roof for a motor vehicle, comprising a movable panel.
