The present invention relates to an image display apparatus and an operation method thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the image display apparatus comprises: a display unit; a user input interface unit which processes a control signal by receiving the control signal from a remote control device; a network interface unit which transmits or receives data through a network; a controller which controls a pointer on the display unit according to a control signal that is received from the remote control device; and a platform which is operated to transmit or receive the data through the network according to the control signal that is received from the remote control device, wherein the platform includes an OS kernel and an application layer which is driven on the OS kernel, and the application layer includes an application that can be installed or deleted by being downloaded through the network. Thus, the invention improves user convenience.
