The invention discloses the use of a diol as a biocidal substance, characterised in that said use relates to a diol of formula (I), in which R1 and R2, independently of one another represent an organic group each having at least one C atom, or in which R1 and R2 together form a ring system that consists of at least 4 C atoms, and optionally can be substituted if required (referred to hereafter simply as 1,3-diol).
