The method involves determining and storing an actual parked position of a motor vehicle by a global positioning system (GPS) navigation module of a mobile navigation device i.e. electronic key, during parking of the vehicle. An actual position of the vehicle is determined by the navigation module after activating a search function at the navigation device by a user. The actual position is compared with the parked position in the navigation device, and a path to the vehicle is displayed to the user at a display in the navigation device depending on the comparison of the positions.
