PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce operational complexity for a user resulting from display of a drive tree and icons representing respective storage areas on a display device when an external storage device having two or more storage areas is connected to a computer device including the display device. SOLUTION: A CPU 110 provided in a personal computer 100, when a hard disk drive 200 is initially connected to the personal computer 100, assigns a drive letter respectively to a virtual CD-ROM drive area 222 and a hard disk drive area 224 in the hard disk drive 200, and writes information on assignment of the drive letters in a registry as drive letter information. Then, the CPU 110 cancels and prohibits the drive letter assignment to the virtual CD-ROM drive area 222 by executing auxiliary application software stored in the virtual CD-ROM drive area 222.
