PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator miniaturizing a device constitution, while reducing weight in the device constitution by adopting a chain driving system. SOLUTION: This elevator 10 has a car 4 and a counterweight 6 movably arranged in the contrary direction in a hoistway 2, a driving chain 20 for connecting the car 4 and the counterweight 6, a plurality of guide rails 30a-30e for curving the driving chain 20 and a driving device 8 for making the driving chain 20 travel. A sprocket 9 meshing with the driving chain 20 is installed on a rotary shaft of the driving device 8. A size of the hoistway 2 is reduced by laying out the driving chain 20 so that the sprocket 9 and the plurality of guide rails 30a-30e are arranged in close vicinity in an attitude parallel to a sidewall 2a of the hoistway 2 and an outer wall of the car 4.
