<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the yield of amino acids in fermentation by using the metabolism engineering. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing L-amino acids comprises culturing altered bacterial cells having increased amounts of NADPH as compared to unaltered bacterial cells whereby L-amino acid yields from the altered bacterial cells are greater than yields from unaltered bacterial cells. There is also provided a gene encoding phosphoglucoisomerase.
