Sodium-sulfur batteries capable of operation at relatively low temperatures (<150°C) are described herein. The sodium-sulfur batteries include a first compartment (104) containing a first solution of a first solvent and at least one sodium-containing salt, a second compartment (204) containing a second solution of a second solvent and metallic sodium, a solid electrolyte layer (301) separating the first compartment (104) from the second compartment (204) that is selectively permeable to sodium ions, and first and second electrical contacts coupled to the first and second compartments, respectively. In some embodiments, the sodium-sulfur batteries are flow batteries that further include a first storage tank (100) and a second storage tank (200) connected to the first compartment (104) and second compartment (204), respectively. First pump (102) and second pump (202), are connected to first storage tank (100) and second storage tank (200), respectively, and are operable for pumping the first and second solutions to the first and second compartments. |
