Disclosed is a lithium secondary battery wherein an electrode group (4) and a nonaqueous electrolyte are sealed within a battery case (5), said electrode group (4) being obtained by winding up or laminating a positive electrode plate (1) and a negative electrode plate (2), in each of which a mixture layer containing an active material is formed on the surface of a collector, with a porous insulating layer (3) interposed therebetween. Metal particles (12) dissolved from a negative electrode collector (10) are scattered all over a negative electrode mixture layer of the negative electrode plate (2). The metal particles (12) are obtained by reversely charging and then charging the lithium secondary battery, so that a metal is caused to dissolve from the negative electrode collector (10) and then the metal is caused to deposit in the negative electrode mixture layer.
