The magnetic field sensor (1) has a magnetic core (2) and an excitation element (3) for generating a magnetic flux in the magnetic core. The excitation element has an electrical capacitor (40) for generating the magnetic flux. The capacitor has a plate capacitor (4) which is equipped with two capacitor plates (5,6). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a magnetic field sensor.
