The method controls a blood pump for supporting or replacing a natural heart. A current which flows through a motor (32) for driving the blood pump (30) is controlled to have a constant value. The rotation rate may be positively fed back to be added to an instruction value for the current. The blood pump control may be carried out through an analog circuit. The viscosity of the blood may be determined and compared with a reference value and the correction factor is added to the instruction value to bring about the control. The blood pump may have a vane wheel (42) and a magnetic bearing (43) which supports the vane wheel (42) by a magnetic coupling. The wheel is rotated by means of the motor (32) through the magnetic coupling. The magnetic bearing may have a first bearing supporting one side of the wheel and a second bearing supporting the other side.
