The transmission (10) has interconnecting shafts (42, 44, 46) continuously interconnecting a planet gear carrier (14B) of a planetary gear set (14) with a sun gear (16C) of another planetary gear set (16), a sun gear (14C) of the former set with a ring gear (18C) of a third planetary gear set (18), and a planet gear carrier (16B) of the latter set with a gear carrier (18B) of the third set. Torque transmitting mechanisms e.g. clutches (26, 28) and brakes (32, 34), are selectively engaged to create five forward speed ratios and reverse speed ratio between input and output shafts (12, 22).
