<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently perform compression by transmitting or storing a value of a transform coefficient and a position of the transform coefficient in a transform data set by using the small number of bits as much as possible. <P>SOLUTION: A method of data compression, for example for images or audio signals is provided. A step of encoding data by using a transform such as a wavelet transform or a DCT, a step of grouping the transform coefficients by the most significant bit and/or a bit value, and a step of transmitting them group by group are included. When using a code book for the transform, such as matching pursuits, the coefficients may further be grouped by a code book value. In one embodiment, the method allows the data to be described entirely by the positions of the coefficients and the groupings and eliminates the need to store or transmit any coefficient value information. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
