PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve controllability and exhaust in a transition zone by preventing increase of the absolute value of a switching function vector calculated based on a state variable in control of an internal combustion engine or a device accompanying the same by utilizing a sliding mode controller for repetitively calculating linear input and non-linear input with reference to the state variable as the time integral of the deviation of a control output and its target value. SOLUTION: A control device (ECU) for controlling the internal combustion engine or the device accompanying the same includes a sliding mode controller, and a correction control part for stopping updating of the state variable when a condition of having the absolute value of the change amount of a control output corresponding to the change amount of the non-linear input lower than a predetermined threshold value satisfied with the premise that a switching function vector calculated based on a state variable is changed by a predetermined change amount, and resuming updating of the state variable when the deviation of the control output and its target value changes from plus to minus or minus to plus in the period with updating of the state variable stopped.
