PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling a molecular weight of a formed lignophenol derivative in a method for producing the lignophenol derivative by reacting a biomass with a phenol compound. SOLUTION: The method for controlling a molecular weight of the lignophenol derivative includes, in a method for producing the lignophenol derivative by reacting a lignocellulose material with a phenol compound, adding the phenol compound and an acid to the lignocellulose material to give a reaction solution, phase-separating a water layer from the reaction solution, removing the water layer from a reaction system and reacting the acid remaining in a phenol solution with the lignophenol derivative containing a high-molecular weight polymer in the phenol solution.
