PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problems: when a gradation pattern is copied and diverted, it is necessary to update the gradation pattern when the color value of the gradation pattern to be diverted is changed in a sub-scanning direction, and processing speed becomes low since rendering is performed on a per-pixel rendering basis. SOLUTION: As a gradation pattern forming method, an image forming apparatus includes: a means for storing the gradation as a plurality of monochromatic paint-out data; and a means for switching the processing according to the number of changed color channels when the color value is changed in the sub-scanning direction.
