The present invention relates to devices for detecting the presence of water. Specifically, the invention relates to a device for detecting overflow for a combined sewer overflow. The invention involves using a capacitive sensor for detecting the presence of water. The use of a capacitive sensor enables the production of a sensor having a large sensitive surface rendering the latter resistant to fouling. No metal contacts are exposed to the water and at risk of rusting. Said sensors are easily implemented and can have a long battery life as a result of the low power consumption thereof.
