Disclosed are: a modified peptide derived from matrix protein 2 (referred to as "M2", hereinbelow) which is one of surface layer proteins in an influenza virus; and use of the modified peptide. Specifically disclosed are: a modified peptide produced by inserting a cysteine residue into a peptide (referred to as "M2e", hereinbelow) comprising 23 amino acid residues lying between the 2nd amino acid residue to the 24th amino acid residue in the amino acid sequence for M2 of a type-A influenza virus; a fusion protein composed of the modified peptide and a polypeptide; an influenza vaccine containing the modified peptide or the fusion protein as an active ingredient; a device which contains the influenza vaccine and can be delivered into the body of a living organism; a nucleic acid fragment comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding the amino acid sequence for the modified peptide; an expression vector having the nucleic acid fragment integrated theteinto; a host having the expression vector introduced thereinto; and an antibody which can recognize the modified peptide and has a protective effect against influenza viruses.
