The system (1) has combined step-up/step-down converters (2) and battery modules (3), where each battery module is electrically fixed at an input side at inputs (4a, 4b) of the step-up/step-down converters. The step-up/step-down converters are connected in series at an output side. Each battery module is provided with a number of battery cells (7) connected partly in series. The converter includes barrier elements (6a, 6b, 9a, 9b) e.g. Schottky diodes or MOSFETs.
