PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve high cushioning property and fitness by a simple structure relating to a backrest of a chair. SOLUTION: The backrest 5 includes a back plate 8 made of a synthetic resin. The back plate 8 has left and right side members 19 and many horizontally long support plates 22 connecting them. At parts near both left and right ends of the horizontally long support plates 22, a narrow width portion 27 is formed as an easy-to-deform buffer portion. As the easy-to-deform buffer portion of the horizontally long support plates 22, a swollen portion projecting forward from the side member 19 can be formed at left and right root parts as well. The easy-to-deform buffer portion is spread in left and right directions. Since the easy-to-deform buffer portion is easily deformed, the high cushioning property and fitness are secured.
