ILLUMINATION OPTICAL SYSTEM AND PROJECTION DISPLAY APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical system and a projection display apparatus that are capable of displaying an image with high contrast.

SOLUTION: The illumination optical system that illuminates a surface to be illuminated and the projection display apparatus include: two lamp units having an anode and a cathode arranged along the optical axis of a concave mirror; a beam combining portion combining beams from one of the two lamp units with beams from the other of the two lamp units; and a condenser lens condensing the beam from the beam combining portion. The beam combining portion combines the beams from the respective units by reflecting the beam that is emitted from the other unit and that is off the optical axis thereof by a first reflective section disposed on the optical axis of the one unit and off the optical axis of the other unit and a second reflective section disposed off the optical axis of the one unit.
