Disclosed are: a coloring material dispersion which contains coloring material microparticles comprising a dichlorodiketopyrrolopyrrole pigment, enables the production of a color filter having high contrast, and can be reduced in viscosity when used as a raw material for the color filter; and a process for producing the coloring material dispersion. The coloring material dispersion contains a particle growth inhibitor and coloring material microparticles comprising a dichlorodiketopyrrolopyrrole pigment, wherein the coloring material microparticles have an a-type crystallinity degree of 0.65 to 0.90 inclusive, a crystallite size of 6.0 to 13.0 nm as determined in the direction of the (-151) crystal face, and a crystallite size of 5.0 to 23.0 nm inclusive as determined in the direction of the (111) crystal face.
