The pre-cash system has a vehicle environment recognition device (10) for detecting of a forthcoming side impact, and an active vehicle steering (20), by which steering movement is represented at a vehicle independently from guidance instruction of a driver. The vehicle environment recognition device is linked with the active vehicle steering in such a manner that the active vehicle steering originates the steering movement in the direction of the forthcoming side impact. An independent claim is also included for a method for protecting motor vehicle passengers from the side impact.
