A rubber antioxidant comprises a mixture of a 2: 4: 6 trialkyl-phenol and a mono-ether of a dihydric phenol. The trialkyl phenol may be a 2 : 4-dimethyl-6-octyl-phenol, a 2 : 6- dimethyl-4-octyl-phenol or 2 : 6 dibutyl-4-methyl-phenol, in particular one in which the butyl group is tertiary butyl, or the product obtained by alkylating a cresylic acid containing suitable mono or di-alkyl phenol. The mono-ether may be the mono-benzyl ether or the monoethyl ether preferably of a commercial mixture of dihydric phenols containing a preponderance of catechol. In examples mixtures according to the invention are added to a rubber mix consisting of pale crepe, blanc fixe, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, stearic acid, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide and sulphur and the mass vulcanized.
