1399522 Oligomerizing ethylene SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 9 June 1972 [10 June 1971] 27082/72 Addition to 1280578 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] Ethylene is oligomerized to give higher olefins, particularly C 10 -C 16 olefins, at 30-220‹ C. in the presence of a catalyst formed by heating a composition comprising one or more alkali metals supported on or reacted with an alumina containing more than 1% of hydroxyl group, the heating being carried out at a temperature at least equal to the melting point of the metal(s), in an inert gas atmosphere, wherein the alkali metal comprises 0À1 to 50% by wt. of the alumina. Suitably, the oligomerization is effected in the presence of hydrogen and an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent using a slurry of catalyst. The molecular weight distribution of the higher olefins and alpha-olefin content thereof may be controlled by varying (i) the alumina/ alkali metal ratio; (ii) the particular alkali metal or mixture thereof; and, (iii) the ratio of alkali metals in a mixture of such metals. The examples describe the use of catalysts containing various alkali metals or combinations thereof, to give olefin products of specified alphaolefin content and comprising mainly C 10 -C 16 olefins, but containing some C 6 -C 8 and C 18 - C 20 olefin products. |
